Jay was born in St. Louis on a blistery November morning. When he was a child he was always drawn towards art,"I can’t remember a time that art wasn’t important to me!" At the age of 12 he went into his first tattoo shop and knew from that moment that he wanted to be a Tattoo Artist. Jay Johnson started his apprenticeship in late 2009 and became a licensed Tattoo Artist in 2010. In late 2010 Jay moved to Columbia, MO where he worked with another artist named Bobby Thomas who really helped him to develop a style and push himself to become a better Tattooer. Since Jay became a Tattoo Artist he has had multiple influences in his work from his past as a graffiti artist to bring a graphic nature to a lot of his tattoos. Jay enjoys doing new school and illustrative tattoos. He also has a passion for custom lettering and watercolor inspired tattoos. Jay has been inspired by such artist as Kelly Doty, Tanane Whitfield, and Russell Van Schaick. In 2015 Jay accepted a position at Steel & Ink Tattoo and Piercing Studio and adds an unmeasurable influence to the whole crew. Every artist here pushes everyone else to strive for the best possible tattoo that they can achieve.
