to benefit children of Shriner's Hospital, St. Louis

at Steel & Ink Tattoo & Piercing Studio

In the spirit of Christmas & just love in general, all of us here at Steel & Ink Tattoo & Piercing Studio have been collecting toys from the community since November 1st.  The deadline for donations is coming fast! There are only 2 weeks left to donate an unopened toy or teen item to the children of Shriner's Hospital of St. Louis. Seeing people walk through our door with toys & blankets in hand is what makes our days & hearts whole here at Steel and Ink Piercing & Tattoo Studio. There are so many of you who have taken the time to come in and donate and we would like to ,Thank You ,for the masses of toys and teen items to donate to the Shriner's children and families. Although, there are still plenty of  need for more donations. Some examples of great gifts for the children are books, board games, cards, dice, hair accessories, mini speakers, etc. Please find it in your heart to donate TODAY and in exchange for your kind & thoughtful donations you will receive 15% off of your next tattoo and/or piercing with us!

As we all know it has been a rough Holiday Season for Shriners Hospital. On November 15th a fire ripped through a local warehouse destroying toys & blankets destined for the annual Christmas party for patients (& their families) at Shriner's Hospital for Children.  This left the hospital and the patients less than a month away from the party empty handed. Then on November 28th, Wood River Police shared on their Facebook page that "several" Christmas trees that helps support the Shriner's were stolen also!.

After hearing about this unfortunate event we are REALLY encouraging everyone to do their part & donate. We are pleased to say that we have received  many donations in exchange for 15% off a tattoo or piercing this far, but the kids & teens from Shriner's need more! So come by today to help support your community and get a little something for yourself too!

According to our extensive research on trending Body Jewelry and Piercings we have found three piercings that is guaranteed to turn heads this summer. The Earlobe, Tragus and Daith are all the rave this year! Pro-tip, in combination, these three piercings go hand in hand and perfectly compliment each other. That being said, the Daith piercing has the most momentum now. Apart from the Daith being trendy new studies have enlightened us that not only is this piercing beautiful but has shown to ease the severity of migraines, making it the first official pain reliever that simultaneously beautifies you! for the individual that has a poorly placed ear piercing. Incorporating one or more strategically placed earlobe piercing in the form of a constellation is a sure fire way to breathe vibrancy and is still very popular and fashionable.

One piercing trend making it's comeback after a hiatus in 2016 and 2017 is the navel or belly button piercing. Despite the growing concern that this piercing is only compatible for the younger generation. we are here to say that the only time that you are to old for a navel piercing is after your death. So there is your confirmation: summertime is the right time to get your belly button piercing.

A great piercing that is on the rise is the smiley piercing. The smiley piercing goes through the thin fold of the skin (frenulum) just underneath the inner upper and lower lip. A-list celebs like Keke Palmer rocking this piercing it is officially on the rise to set it's prominence this summer.

This oldie but goodie that is climbing the ladder of popularity are nipple piercings. Also showcasing this piercing is celebrity superstar model Bella Hadid. This piercing done in a professional setting with correct placement brings just the right touch of sexiness to the body. A nipple piercing can be your secret or a bold fashion statement.

If you are already pierced and are just looking for a way to spice up your body piercing you can always stop by Steel and Ink Studio at 3565 Ritz Center St. Louis, MO 63125 and see all the newest styles of body jewelry in 14 Karat Gold, Titanium, or 316L Surgical Stainless Steel that can be paired with an array of colorful or clear cubic zirconia, synthetic opals and semi-precious stones in a prong or bezel set to accentuate your summer style.

Tattoo Aftercare-How to Care for your New Tattoo

Tips To Care For Your Tattoos

So you have found the right tattoo artist for your new tattoo, sat through the pain, and now have the tattoo of your dreams. What's next? Time to ensure that your new tattoo stays beautiful!
Caring for your new tattoo is your responsibility from the very moment that you get out of your tattoo artist chair, until you die.
Your tattoo's quality and lifespan is imperative to the way you heal out your tattoo. Just look at the tattoo by Jay Johnson of Steel and Ink Studio: Tattoos and Piercings in St Louis, Mo.

Immediate Tattoo Aftercare:

Your Tattoo Artist will most likely have advice on how to care for their particular style of tattooing technique. Listen to your artist first and foremost and if there are issues with healing consult your tattoo artist first.
  1. Leave your tattoo covering on your tattoo for at least the first hour after being tattooed. Your artist should instruct you on how long to keep your bandage on the tattoo depending on the type of bandage. You don't want to expose it too early or ruin your clothes with blood and ink!
  2. Once you have removed your bandage, make sure to wash your hands with a liquid non-scented antibacterial soap (Dial soap Gold is great). This keeps your tattoo clean and helps you avoid potential infection.
  3. After washing your tattoo we suggest letting it air dry then applying a small amount of tattoo aftercare ( Redemption Tattoo Aftercare is great, we think). I cannot caution enough to USE SPARINGLY a thin layer is better than drowning the tattoo and will help you heal faster.
  4. After the first couple of days using the Redemption (tattoo aftercare) you can switch to a non scented water based lotion to keep your tattoo from drying out during the healing process.
  5. During the first couple weeks of healing it is important to keep tight clothes off of your fresh tattoo to avoid losing ink and scabbing. If you do develop scabs Do Not Pick. or soak your tattoo in water.
With summer approaching; skin, tattoos and piercings are in our vision everywhere. Summer is also the time of the year to catch all your favorite artist at your local tattoo conventions. Steel and Ink Tattoo and Piercing Studio will be attending Kansas City's Villain  Arts Tattoo Convention May 19th - 21st, 2017. This tattoo convention is by far the best in the area,. Join us at the Kansas City Tattoo Convention or come by the studio and get tattooed!

Tips and Tricks on how to Avoid a "Tattoo Fail"!

Recently, I saw a post of a picture of a tattoo collectors "Tattoo Fail" on  social media, which was preceded with all kinds of jokes, laughter and I think even a meme or two. Now all of a sudden, this guy is an internet sensation thanks to his cruel friend that shared the photo and the misspelled phrase on his calf! While some of the comments were funny, I couldn't help but feel for the guy and think about  what he was going to do to fix this permanent "Tattoo Fail". Then my thoughts and heart wondered  about some of the double mastectomy cancer survivors that are getting 3-D Nipple and Areola realistic tattoos. Some of these women are getting tattooed by Surgeons that are not familiar with tattooing, while other women are trusting tattoo artist, who can only see dollar signs and are totally not aware of the technique and skill required for success. Now I get that everyone has a bad day and  tattoo artists' are NO exception to that rule. I just feel like that there are some steps that we can take to ensure a good tattoo.
While now your in a rush to go get your tattoo, or to have it removed, repaired or altered , you should totally take a moment to get your bearings and research properly the artist that you are going to approach to do your procedure. Clients that take their time choosing their artist to either create, cover-up or remove their tattoos have a much better experience and a successful result.

Here is my best advice I have for all the tattoo enthusiast looking for the perfect tattoo:

  • Spellcheck thoroughly before putting on your stencil. The tattoo artist could be focused on the overall design and all of the other aspects of tattooing a bleeding canvas.
  • Research your artist and the studio to ensure their level of skill is appropriate for the procedure
  • Know that the dates that you are permanently tattooing on your body are correct
  • Check and make sure that your artist and studio is licensed and insured
  • AVOID the "Kitchen Magician"
If you follow these simple tips, you will have " no regerts" when you finally get your tattoo!

Disclaimer: None of these tattoos were done at Steel and Ink Studio. I simply googled "Tattoo Fails".

Spring is approaching and Steel & Ink Tattoo Studio STL MO, have some tips to help keep your tattoos from fading.

Roughly 45 million people in the United States have at least one tattoo, according to the FDA.

As more of those original young tattoo collectors attain seniority, it's not uncommon to see grandparents, great-grandparents with intricate masterpieces on their anatomy.

So now your in the studio hearing all the tattoo machines buzzing. You have worked with your tattoo artist to create a meaningful piece of artwork that you are willing to commit to forever, and anxious to wear with pride.

A really important aspect of getting tattooed is how it will age. As your tattoo heals and ages the ink will spread under the dermis in the subcutaneous and slightly alter the look of your tattoo. Tattoos will fade overtime no matter what, but the sun's ultraviolet rays will cause them to fade quicker. Other factors that can contribute to tattoos fading is the way the you heal your tattoo. It is important to know how your body heals and to listen to your tattoo artist' aftercare instructions.

To prevent tattoos from dulling, it is necessary to wear sunblock on your tattoos. It is also recommended to use a moisturizer every day to prevent the skin from drying out. Wearing proper clothing that covers the tattoos is an important way to protect tattoos and keep them from fading; darker and tightly woven fabrics are ideal and offer the most protection.
